• Q: What are the bus stop guidelines?

    A: Every District 308 student who is eligible for transportation services is assigned a specific bus stop and route number.  Our Routing Specialist in the Department of Transportation utilizes the Versatrans software system to determine the required bus stops.  The Routing Specialist considers bus seating  capacity, student data, boundary information, distance traveled, timing and safety variables during the process to create the safest, most effective and efficient bus routes possible.  We strive to place bus stops no more than .50 miles from each rider's home, although the distance from most stops is far less. Even though we may pass your house during the bus route, we cannot stop at your residence.  Bus stop locations can change from year to year as families move in and out of subdivisions, students advance grade levels and continual assessment of route efficiencies.

    Q: We live on a cul-de-sac; will the bus come down our street? 

    A: Except for special education circumstances, buses are generally not routed into a cul-de-sac. Cul-de-sac stops are considered unwise for the following reasons:

    • Cul-de-sac stops create blind spots, often causing students to enter or exit in a danger zone around the bus. (At a corner stop or street curb stop, they enter/exit outside the danger zone.)
    • Different styles and sizes of buses make maneuvering in a cul-de-sac difficult.
    • The rear of the bus has the potential to swing around close to the sidewalk.
    • Parked cars and other obstacles create road hazards that may not be seen until entering the cul-de-sac and at a point of no return.
    • Backing up a bus when students are on board is strictly forbidden.
    • Property damage to mailboxes and landscaping can occur.

    Q: Why do some children have to cross the street to board the bus?

    A: We are not able to route buses so that all children can board the bus at the door side. We suggest, if you prefer, that children wait on the side of the street where they reside. The bus will stop traffic in all directions to accommodate students who need to cross the street. Please follow the directions of the bus driver.

    Q: Is the District required to transport students who live less than one and one-half miles from their assigned attendance center?

    A: As determined by the State Board of Education, no they do not.  School Boards may provide transportation for pupils living less than one and one-half miles as measured by the customary route of travel from the school attended and may make a charge for such transportation in an amount not to exceed the cost thereof, which shall include a reasonable allowance for depreciation of the vehicles so used.

    Q: How is the one and one-half miles measured?

    A: State statue defines the measurement as the distance from the exit of the property where the pupil resides to the point where pupils are normally unloaded at the school attended; such distance shall be measured by determining the shortest distance on normally traveled roads or streets.

    Q: My child carries a large musical instrument and/or heavy backpack. He/she is the only student using the stop and it needs to be closer to our home.  Why can't it be? 

    A: Bus stops are centrally located for all students along a route. Bus stops are not changed to accommodate one or more students because that may affect other students who would then have to board farther from their home. 

    Q: Why are there only a few students on some buses and my child's bus is crowded?

    A: Decisions regarding each bus route are made by careful planning based on information from school registration, previous similar routes, and Department of Transportation data. Most routes are fixed in late summer and changes are made after the first three weeks of school.  Distance from school, number of buses and drivers, and grouping of students and neighborhoods are all factors that are considered.
