• Unit 3: Culture and Language Lesson Plans (Ch. 4 / 5)

     

    Day 1: Wednesday, 10/20/21 

    Objective: Analyze a culture different from your own.  Compare / contrast similarities & differences of the Nacirema to your culture.

    Activities:

    1. Students should have turned in Ch. #4, Key Issue #1
    2. Nacirema Activity PPT: How does your knowledge of other cultures affect your views of cultures different from your own? (Burp, Shoes, Peace Sign)
    3. Nacirema Reading Activity Edited Version
      1. Hand out Nacirema Case Study Directions Sheet
      2. Hand out Case Study Readings and assign groups
    • Each group will receive a short excerpt from the original document and will answer questions 
    1. c) Groups will discuss their reading with the class.

    HW: Ch. 4, Key Issue #2 due Monday



    Day 2: Thursday, 10/21/21 

    Objective: Analyze a culture different from your own.  Compare / contrast similarities & differences of the Nacirema to your culture.  Distinguish the difference between pop and folk cultures.

    Activities:

    1. Nacirema Reading Activity 
      1. Groups will discuss their reading with the class
      2. Discuss the two characteristics the groups gave the Nacirema people. 

          2)  Pop vs. Folk Culture Notes with guide

    HW: Finish the Nacirema Reflection questions

            Ch. 4, Key Issue #2 due Monday

            Europe Map is due Nov. 1

            

    Day 3: Friday, 10/22/21

    Objective: Distinguish the difference between pop and folk cultures.

    Activities:

    1. Finish Pop vs. Folk Culture Notes with guide
    2. Explain the Dora the Cultural Explorer Assignment

    HW: Work on Dora the Explorer Partner assignment / Due Friday, Oct. 29

            Europe Map due Monday, Nov. 1

             

    Day 4: Monday, 10/25/21

    Objective: Students will be assessed on Ch. 4 Key Issue 2. Students will also learn cultural vocab that is not in our textbook.  

    Activities:
    1) Chapter 4 Key Issue 2 Quiz (10 min)

    2) Go over “Cultural Terms Not in Book PPT” (15 Min)

    3) Work time  for the Dora the Explorer Assignment

    HW: Taboo Reading W.S. and come up with 3 American Taboos (Gestures, Cultural, Etiquette, Etc.)

           Ch. 4, Key Issue #3 Questions due Wednesday

     

     Day 5: Tuesday, 10/26/21

    Objective: Analyze different American Home styles throughout different time periods.  Compare / contrast the styles.

    Activities:

    1. W: What is a Taboo? / Discuss American Taboos (10 Min)
    2. Housing Types PPT

            - Complete American Homes Styles W.S.

    HW: Ch. 4, Key Issue #3 Questions due Wednesday

            Dora the Cultural Explorer assignment due Friday

    Day 6: Wednesday, 10/27/21

    Objective: Discuss how folk and popular culture is unequal due to unequal access to technology.

    Activities:

    1. BBW: Imagine life w/o internet.  What are the benefits and the challenges?
    2. PPT on Access to Technology
    3. As a class we will read a few short articles on how pop and folk culture is different due to unequal access to technology. 

    HW: Work on “Dora the Cultural Explorer” Project due Friday

             

    Day 7: Thursday, 10/28/21

    Objectives: Students will view the tension between pop vs. folk culture

    Activities:

    1) Watch Afghan Star and complete the video guide (1 Hour and 15 Min)

    HW: Dora the Cultural Explorer assignment due tomorrow

            Europe Map due Monday

            Europe Map and Vocab Quiz is Monday

     

    Day 8: Friday, 10/29/21

    Objectives: Students will view the tension between pop vs. folk culture

    Activities:

    1) Watch Afghan Star and complete the video guide (1 Hour and 15 Min)

    HW: Europe Map due Monday

             Europe Map and Vocab Quiz is Monday

             Key Issue #4 due Tuesday

             AP Classroom Questions due Wednesday


     

    Day 9: Monday, 11/1

    Objectives: Students will be assessed on the map of Europe and on Culture vocab. Students will be introduced to how social media technology influences pop culture. Explain the role that social media plays in the shaping of pop culture and youth culture. 

    Activities:

    1. Take the Europe Map and Vocab Quiz (15 Min.)
    2. Watch “Generation Like” (60 Min.)
    • Answer reflection sheet questions

    HW: Key Issue #4 due tomorrow

      

    Day 10: Tuesday, 11/2

    Objectives: Students will be assessed on Key Issue #2 as a review. Students will be introduced to how social media technology influences pop culture. Explain the role that social media plays in the shaping of pop culture and youth culture. 

    Activities:

    1. Discuss “Generation Like” and how it influences pop culture
    • Complete reflection sheet.
    1. Take a quiz on Ch. 4, Key Issue #2

       HW: Students need to bring their textbook to class

               Ch. 5, Key Issue #1 and #2 due Thursday

             

    Day 11: Wednesday, 11/3

    Objective: Analyze where languages are distributed worldwide

    Activities:

    1. Focus Statement “There is more to conversation than just language.”
    2. Language Tree Scavenger Hunt PPT with note sheet

    HW: Ch. 5, Key Issue #1 and #2 due tomorrow. 

     

    Day 12: Thursday, 11/4

    Objective: Analyze why other languages are related to English. Analyze the origins of the Indo-European languages   Identify the difference between dialects and accents and review different isogloss maps.

    Activity:

    1. Go over the Theories of Origin of the Indo-European Language 
    2. Discuss the origins of the English language and why it is such an important language (lingua franca).
    3. Dialects:.Isogloss PPT (15 min)

    HW: Ch. 5, Key Issue #3 due tomorrow

     

    Day 13: Friday, 11/5

    Objective: Analyze where languages are distributed worldwide and review the language tree.

    Activities:

    2. Partner work on the Language Tree Review Sheet

    HW: Ch. 5, Key Issue #4 due Tuesday

     

    Day 14: Monday, 11/8 

    Objective: Students will analyze how language can be a unifying (centrifugal) and divisive (centripetal) force. Students will review the language content by working on AP classroom questions.

    Activities:

    Watch the Power of Place (EdPuzzle) on how language can be a unifying and divisive force.

    • Discuss the video

    HW: Assign the AP Classroom Language Questions

            Ch. 5, Key Issue #4 due Tuesday



    Day 15: Tuesday, 11/9 

    Objective: Students will analyze the importance of keeping languages alive in regards to one’s culture.

    Activities:

    1. Recording a Dying Language Activity
    2. Read the article on the Romansch / answer questions together

    HW: Work on the AP Classroom Questions

     

    Day 16: Wednesday, 11/10

    Objective: Students will write a practice FRQ on Pop Culture. The students will also analyze two of their classmates' essays. 

    Activities:

    1. Students will write a practice Language FRQ (25 minutes) 
    2. They will analyze the essay as a class (20 min)

    HW: Finish the Language AP classroom questions

            Hand out the study guide 

     

    Day 17: Thursday, 11/11

    Objective: Objective: Students will review for the Unit 3 Test.

    Activities:

    1. Play Kahoot to review for the Unit 3 Test

    HW: Hand out the Unit 3 Reflection Sheet 

            Study for the Unit 3 M/C Test

     

    Day 18: Friday, 11/12

    Objective: Students will be assessed through writing on their knowledge of Unit 3

    Activities:

    1. Take the Unit 3 FRQ Test (35 Min)

    HW: Study for the Unit 3 M/C Test

     

    Day 19: Monday, 11/15

    Objective: Objective: Students will be assessed on Unit 3 by taking the M / C Test.

    Activities:

         1) Students will take the Unit 3 M/C Test

    HW: Ch. 6, Key Issue #1 due tomorrow
