• What does a school social worker do?

One of a school social worker`s roles in the school setting is to provide services to students. This is done through individual sessions, groups specific to several students` needs, and classroom lessons on topics such as social skills, character, and problem solving. Students that a social worker meets with are either referred by teachers or other staff and/or parents.

School social workers are also a resource to staff members. Staff may come to a school social worker for ideas regarding; behavior management, child development, or children with special needs, or any other social/emotional issues.

School social workers also provide support to parents with regards to the student's educational experience.  Social workers can guide families to the appropriate community resources their child or family may need.
