I am a speech-language pathologist at The Wheatlands Elementary School. I have worked for District 308 since 2000. Prior to working in the school setting I worked in hospital and rehab facilities with patients who suffered a stroke, traumatic brain injury, and other neurological impairments. I attended Michigan State University, East Lansing, Mich., and earned both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees there. The field of communication disorders appeals to me because it combines my interest in science and healthcare with my love for language and teaching. My teaching minor was Spanish education at the secondary level, and I have utilized my Spanish language ability throughout my career. This profession has allowed me to work with neonatals to geriatrics with swallowing/feeding, speech, and language disorders, and I absolutely love my work.
As much I loved working in the medical setting early in my career, I always knew I would eventually settle into the school setting. I love working on a team to help struggling students and being a part of a school community. I also love watching students grow and develop and being a part of that developmental process. When speech and language disorders are remediated early on, barriers to academic success are lifted. I attend many conferences and workshops each year to stay current with research and to learn new therapy techniques. I have also developed a special interest in teaching English learners, particularly as it relates to special education. I am currently taking my second graduate level course on teaching English learners.
