• Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year.

A little about me:  I have been teaching here at Murphy since it opened in 2012.  I previously taught Health and PE at Bednarcik for 5 years.  Also taught PE and Health at high school and jr high level for 4 years prior.

With 19 years of teaching, I am thinking this is going to be the craziest year ever!!  However, we will make it the best EVER!!

I have also been the soccer coach for Murphy for the boys and girls seasons every year (also at Bednarcik before we opened here and for about 5 years prior experience to Oswego 308).

This year we will be doing a lot of fitness activities and goal setting .  Due to being remote learning, every day we will connect thru google classroom.  During that time, you will do an activity (usually a circuit).  At the end of class you will need to make sure that we come back together to sign off.  There will be an activity that you will need to complete to get the points for the day.  Students will be expected to complete 20-30 minutes of daily activity.  Some of this will be with the teacher and the remainder will be students independently working.

Grading will be based mostly daily participation.  There may be times that there will be other assignments added to this.  Students are expected to check-in on Google classroom and be prepared to participate with appropriate clothes and shoes every day.  Students will not earn daily points if they do not participate and do not turn in an exit slip.

When a student is unable to participate due to a parent excuse (max of 3 days) or medical excuse, they must email this note or dr note to Ms. Kerr and the school nurse.  A dr note must indicate how long the student is to sit out.  If there is no set date for returning, there must be a follow up note clearing the student to return to PE.  Depending on the illness/injury, an alternate assignment might be given for those days.

If there are any questions please feel free to contact me.  Easiest way for me to return communication is usually email (ckerr@sd308.org).  My phone number is 630.636.5134.

Dress/PE Uniform:  Dressing for PE is a major component for student success.  Students are required to dress for PE almost every day (apart from shortened class periods).  If a student does not dress for PE, but has appropriate shoes there will be a reduction in points.  However, if proper shoes are not available (regardless if proper uniform) he or she will not be allowed to participate and will lose the 10 participation points for the day.

Behavior Issues:  Behavior that requires a student be removed from the activity will result in a loss of participation points for the day.  If a student is a danger to him/herself or others, he or she will not be allowed to participate, and will lose points.

Tardy Policy:  A student is considered tardy to class when he/she is not in their assigned spot when the PE bell rings (4 minutes after regular bell).  In addition, students tardy to their warm up spot will have a one point deduction from that days grade.

Absences and Medical/Parent Notes:  Students do NOT earn their daily participation points if they are unable to participate in PE.  If a student is sitting out one day he/she will receive an EX (or excused).  If it is to be more than one day, the student will receive worksheet(s) to do so that the points may be earned.  Students cannot make up points they have lost for the following reasons: Behavior, No Dress or Partial Dress, Tardy or Unexcused Absence.  If a student is absent it will be marked as an EX (or excused) from that day.

Participation versus Performance:  Students will NOT be graded on their ability levels.  Students will be graded based on effort to complete skills accurately and on their knowledge of how to perform a skill.  Participation is the key to success in PE.

Tests/Quizzes:  In addition to participation grading, students will be quizzed or tested over skill knowledge, sport rules, and fitness concepts throughout the year.  Quizzes will be done through a website called ‘quia.com’.  The student is often given 12 days to complete this quiz. This will be told to the student at the beginning of the unit, it is on the board in the hallway, they will be periodically reminded and it is also found on my website.

If you are not feeling well, then please dress and do the best you can for that day.  Let the teacher know your situation prior to the start of class.

    UNIFORMS:

    • Each student must wear the required Junior High Physical Education uniform.  All uniforms must be in good repair.
    • Uniforms include a t-shirt that is printed with "Oswego Phys Ed" and blue jersey shorts.  The cost for the full uniform is $20.00.  Each student must purchase a uniform at the beginning of the year if they do not already have one.  This uniform will be used at the high school also.  If your child loses the uniform, they may purchase a new one at any time.  Each piece of the uniform costs $10.00.
    • Each student must wear a pair of athletic type shoes and socks.  They do not need to have a separate pair of athletic shoes for class, but if they are going to wear sandals to school, they will need to bring shoes and socks with them to class.  We suggest that students keep an extra pair of shoes in their PE locker, but do not require it. Shoes MUST have Velcro or laces to be used in class.
    • During the colder months that we are outside, students may wear sweats and a sweatshirt that they have brought from home, for class use only.  They may not wear a sweatshirt they wore to school (if they do, this will result in a 2 point reduction for that day)! This is for safety and personal hygiene reasons, but also so that they do not ruin their winter jackets and clothes.  These sweats can be any color, as long as they are only for physical education class.  Please note that we will not take students outside if the temperature is below 32 degrees.

    LOCKER ROOM EXPECTATIONS:

    • Responsibility is a very important quality for our students.  We issue each student a lock at the beginning of the school year, and it is their responsibility to use that lock.  We want them to protect their personal belongings.
    • If students lose their lock or the lock is damaged, there is a replacement fee of $5.00.
    • Using locks in physical education begins in 6th grade and continues through high school.  It is very important that all students use their responsibility skills with locker procedures.  It is NOT the Murphy Junior High staff`s responsibility to find or replace uniforms that students lose.
    • DO NOT keep valuables in lockers; locking them up is no guarantee of safety. We are not responsible for anything in the locker rooms.
    • For athletes there are big lockers available for use during the sports season. However, there are also big lockers that are available for the student use during the class time you have PE.

Degrees and Certifications:

Ms. Cathy Kerr

I graduated from Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, Il., with a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in physical education. I also have a minor in health education and an endorsement in driver education. I spent four years teaching and coaching high school level physical education, health, and driver education. I then made the move to the junior high level, where I have spent nine years teaching mainly health with a couple of physical education classes. When Murphy Junior High School opened, I transitioned to become a full-time physical education teacher.
