Ms. Toni Petri

Hello!  I am looking forward to working with you to create a great school year for your child!  I have been working in the education field since 2009.  I was a career changer, who was drawn to teaching so that I can make a greater positive impact on my community.

For my undergraduate degree, I attended Tufts University, in Medford, MA, where I received my bachelor’s degree in Geology. After college, I worked in landscaping and started my own gardening business in the Washington, D.C. area. Although I loved designing and installing gardens, I felt compelled to go back to school so that I could work in a more service-oriented profession. I was especially drawn to work in special education as I have family members with learning disabilities. I attended Hunter College (CUNY), in New York City, and received a master’s degree in Childhood Special Education, with a specialization in Learning Disabilities.  While I was in grad school, I also worked as a teacher in the children's garden at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

In 2012, my husband and I moved from New York City to IL.  As I waited for my teaching certification to transfer to Illinois, I worked in self-contained autism classrooms as a paraprofessional. I learned so much from this experience, and I still use strategies and tools from those classrooms every day.  Next, I worked in the Plainfield School District 202 as a resource teacher, before starting as a Learning Behavior Specialist in SD308 in 2014.  At Homestead, I have been co-teaching math classes as well as teaching pull-out reading and writing groups.  I also participate in our school's special education committee (PPST), the intervention team (MTSS), and the district's Science Curriculum Committee.  Additionally, I have been certified through the Wilson Reading Program as a Wilson Dyslexia Practioner (WDP) and I have been taking postgraduate classes on teaching students who are English Language Learners (ELL).  I am looking forward to this next year in School District 308, and I am honored to work with such an amazing team at Homestead!
