Oswego, Ill. (March 15, 2023 -- Congratulations to David Jeffers, building engineer at Brokaw Early Learning Center, for having been named a Top 10 Finalist in the Cintas Custodian of the Year contest! “An abundance of nominations highlighting remarkable custodians across the country were received." Christiny Betsch, marketing manager, Cintas, said, “As always, it’s difficult to select the top 10, but this year’s finalists stood out for their commitment, kindness and determination.”

Brokaw's building engineer, "Mr. Dave" as he is referred to around Brokaw, was nominated for consideration in the Cintas Custodian of the Year contest based on the following: "In October 2022, Brokaw Early Learning Center suffered a fire that destroyed one therapy room and severely impacted an inclusive classroom. Dave Jeffers stepped up, spending long hours clearing out the damage. While the restoration service was rolling out critical instructional materials and adaptive toys for students with special needs, Mr. Dave stopped them and quickly notified the teachers. The items were able to be inventoried by staff and many personal items were saved. He consistently goes above and beyond and was a light during this traumatic event. He’s always been a role model for students and brings special care to Brokaw."

Mr. Dave was also recognized as a District 308 PRIDE (Proudly Recognizing Individuals Demonstrating Excellence) Employee winner during March of 2022, where his peers indicated the following about him, "Dave is the only male employee in a building or women. He stays patient, answers and follows through with ALL requests, and maintains a sense of humor while doing so. He is always willing to help move furniture when rooms need to be re-arranged, and he also helps repair and maintain our kids' toys and equipment. From taking out smelly garbage to oiling a squeaky tricycle wheel, to dealing with constant requests to make any given classroom warmer or cooler, Mr. Dave willingly does it all!”

It is now time to V-O-T-E for Mr. Dave! The voting period will end on April 14, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. Visitors may vote as often as they like!

“We’re truly inspired by each of the finalists who do much more than clean schools,” said John Barrett, Executive Director, ISSA. “School custodians are beacons of light in their communities and students look up to them as positive role models who lead by example.”

Cintas will award $10,000 to the winning custodian and $5,000 in Cintas and Rubbermaid products and services to the winner’s school.
