Oswego, Ill. (March 8, 2019)

Each spring the Department of Germanic Studies from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) hosts a High School Day. On High School Day German teachers and their students from throughout the Chicago area come to UIC to participate in various German language competitions, visit undergraduate German classes, and take part in language games.

Students compete in the following categories (in the target language of German): Poetry Recitation, Culture Essay, Skits in German, Spelling Bee, City Guide, Eindrücke von Amerika, Werbespot-Video, and Program Cover Art Contest.

Students are judged by a UIC panel in all categories and by Consular representatives, faculty and representatives of the Goethe Institut in the final round. Trophies are awarded to first, second, and third place in each category.

The students from Oswego East High School have competed nine of the ten years that district 308 has offered German in this High School Day at UIC. The students have always represented the district, the German program, and themselves very well.

Congratulations to Mikayla Williams, Viktoriya Ulman and John Green who placed first in the Werbespot-Video category for the second year in a row!

We would also like to recognize the following students who also competed:  Emily Harschbarger, Isabelle Uther, and Alaina Hyland (Skits in German); Molly Mraz (Spelling Bee); Kai Lidke (Cultural Essay); Andy Yin and John Green (Cover Art); and Ryan Hudson (College Tour).
