Junior High Athletics for 2019/2020
School District 308 and OEA agree on MOU To Reinstate Junior High Sports
Oswego, Ill. (June 24, 2019) — The Oswego Community Unit District 308 Board of Education voted to approve a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Oswego Education Association (OEA) at its June 17 meeting. The action reinstated junior high athletics for the 2019-2020 school year. Due to budget cutting measures, junior high athletics were set to move to intramural-only beginning in August of 2019, however due to the union agreement, the schools will see competitive sports return, at least for one year.
The OEA membership voted to accept the MOU with changes to schedules A and B of the current collective bargaining agreement, effective only for the 2019-2020 school year. The change brings about enough savings to allow for competitive sports to be held at the junior high level. The agreement is for one year only, after its expiration, all language in the collective bargaining agreement will apply. The MOU is contingent on the district continuing the athletic program in the junior high schools.
The maximum season for competitive junior high sports, under the new agreement, will be a maximum of seven weeks in duration. A new stipend for the season was created within Category 4 of Schedule A, “In District Competitive Junior High Athletics”. Competitive sports for junior high include Cross Country, Soccer, Track, Volleyball, Basketball, and Wrestling. Additionally, all athletic-related expenses in Schedule B (including ticket takers, vehicle parkers, etc.) for junior and senior high schools will be reduced by 10% to capture additional savings. The Elementary and Junior High School Intramural Stipend moved to the category of club stipend, and will meet for a maximum of fifteen hours.
The total savings of these changes in the MOU equates to $290,520, which added to the Junior High Athletic Fees covers the cost of operating the sports.
