English Learner Students Visit Waubonsee Community College
Oswego, Ill. (October 2019)
Oswego East High School and Oswego High School English Learner (EL) students participated in a college visit to Waubonsee Community College (WCC) on October 11, 2019. The 39 EL students in attendance began the day at the student services building listening to a presentation from a WCC admissions advisor. The admissions advisor indicated the unique differences between being a student at the high school level and being a student at the college level. Also discussed during the visit was information on services offered, clubs, and activities that students at Waubonsee Community College have available to participate in while students are attending the college. Later in the presentation, the application process, scholarships, grants, and the general process of applying for financial aid to pay for tuition and books was discussed. After the presentation, students enjoyed a tour of the campus as well as a lunch stop in the college’s cafeteria where they were met by former EL students who currently attend WCC. This trip exposed the students to a local community college and encouraged them to start planning for their future.
