OHS Principal Mr. Wayne Set to Retire

Mike Wayne, OHS Principal

Principal Mike Wayne will retire at the conclusion of this school year, after serving as Oswego High School’s Principal for 14 years. Mr. Wayne has been in public education for 33 years, starting his career as a high school social studies teacher, football and tennis coach. When he began at OHS in 2006, there were a little over 1,500 students attending the school, as he retires that number has grown to 2,800 students! He has been there for two major additions and significant renovations to allow for growth. The staff at OHS has also increased by 100 people since Mr. Wayne started there. He is the second longest serving OHS principal since the school’s inception in 1886.

Do you know Mr. Wayne has over 50 orange and blue ties?! His panther pride shows in all he does. While retirement will bring more time for him to enjoy family, travel, volunteer, mentor, and work on home renovations, he will greatly miss the relationships he’s made at OHS with students, staff and families. He passes along this advice to the next leader of OHS “Embrace and celebrate the history, tradition, and pride of Oswego High School.” Mr. Wayne’s favorite saying is “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” His hope is that the next panther principal will value the trust and relationships that characterize OHS and continue the legacy.

Students, staff, and community members will miss seeing Mr. Wayne in the halls and at many school events. His welcoming nature, sensible approach to difficult situations, and dependability will be missed. “Mr. Wayne has been the face of OHS for the past 14 years; he knows and genuinely cares about his students and his staff. We wish him the very best in his well-deserved retirement,” shared Superintendent Dr. John Sparlin.

While Mr. Wayne can never be replaced, the search for the new leader of OHS has begun. The search process will include input from staff and parents. During his time as Principal of OHS, Mr. Wayne has inspired, encouraged, consoled, and supported thousands of students. His dedication to Oswego High School can be characterized by the words of the school’s song, “Show all your colors, proudly they fly. Orange and blue we’re true to you, so cheer for Oswego High.”  Congratulations on your retirement Mr. Wayne, while you will not always work in Oswego High School, your spirit and enthusiasm will remain... Once a Panther, Always a Panther!
